Vishuddha, the fifth chakra
I have been recently been learning about the throat chakra, this is the fifth chakra and is located in the throat. It is said that if the throat chakra is balanced we can communicate our feelings to others with clarity and ease, and we live our lives with honesty and integrity.
However, one thing I didn’t realise is that if your throat chakra is imbalanced or closed, it can effect you not only emotionally but physically too. Ailments such as earaches, sore throats, thyroid problems, speech problems, tiredness, depression, jaw problems and laryngitis can all relate to the throat chakra.
These physical ailments tend to be sometimes the result of problems related to our emotional well being. For example feeling shy, introverted or anxious or unable to communicate our feelings freely (as with a deficient throat chakra), could lead to depression and tiredness long term if we do not address the underlying problems with our ability to communicate.
Other problems can also arise if your throat chakra is imbalanced such as, shouting and yelling at people, talking over people, interrupting, gossiping and lying and being dishonest.
So here’s how to open and balance out your throat chakra……
Crystals……….Such as turquoise, aquamarine, lapis, blue topaz.
Turquoise promotes well-being, wholeness and good communication. It helps to rejuvenate and strengthen and also helps you to connect to your inner wisdom.
Lapis promotes intuition, truth and insight, helps to identify your gifts and abilities, and brings self-awareness, personal & spiritual power.
Some of the crystals you can get as a worry or thumb stone, which are nice to keep on you all day or alternatively you can get them as necklaces or pendants.
Foods…. All fruit, fruit juices and teas.
Essential oils…. Oils such as Sandalwood, Lavender, Jasmine, and Rosewood are good for emotional balancing.
Try adding a couple of drops on your pillow at night before sleeping, or try incorporating in to oil burners, massage oils or moisturising creams.
Affirmations…… Try adding an affirmation to your practice either before, after or during your practice, examples of affirmations linked to the throat chakra are…

Asana postures to include: back bends such as Camel pose (Ustrasana), Fish pose (Matsyasana), Bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana), Upward-facing Bow pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana), Supported shoulder stand (Salamba Sarvagasana), Plough pose (Halasana) or Lion Pose/Breath (Simhasana).
The colour blue…..
In addition try visualising the colour blue throughout your asana practice, or at the end of a sequence. The colour blue, is usually associated with thoughts that are calm, tranquil, and serene. If your thoughts are calm then this can help you to think more clearly and help you communicate more effectively.
If you find it difficult to visualise the colour blue, then try to think of a material object that is blue.
